When Jean-Vincent Simonet came across the book 

 (The Songs of Maldoror), he felt hugely attracted to the dark, theatrical and transgressive character. The cutting-edge book praising youth revolt, blasphemy and the victory of dream over reality was published in 1869 by Comte de Lautréamont. Simonet decided to revive the literary enigma. His photographs are based on the atmosphere it evokes: gothic angels provided with dramatic blue photoshopped skies full of stars and dead branches merged into pink and blue shapes that look like hairs. The eclectic style inspired him to shift between analogue and digital, using digital techniques to glitch and merge photographs. This enables the mysterious atmosphere of the book to become tangible in the pictures. That the book was once banned because of its blasphemous character, comes as no surprise.

For Orejarena and Stein, the notion of glitch proves fruitful framework for reflecting on many questions, not least on the ubiquitous medium of photography and its changing meaning and purpose in the screen age – where the’ poor image’, in Hito Steyerl’s term, circulates in unfathomable quantities.

Foam proudly presents the work of a new generation of artists in the group exhibition 

. The 20 participating photographers address the pressing problems of our times. Together, they explore and extend the boundaries of what photography is today.   

As a diverse group of artists, each of them presents their own visual language. Through their works, they critically look at the world around us. They use the photographic medium to question collective affairs and ongoing issues happening in the world. At the same time, they explore how these issues have an impact on a personal level, moving between a local, historical, symbolic, emotional and bodily perspective. 

This group of artists uses a wide range of photographic genres to tell their stories. With portraiture and documentary photography, digital created images and archival material, the talents create a space for the viewer to sit with situations and current events, to reflect and respond to.   

Complementing the physical experience at Foam, this digital exhibition offers a deeper look at the Talents and their works. What goes on behind the surface? What is the inspiration? What techniques are used? This exhibition combines artistic context with educational perspectives. Read, see, and hear more about the themes and topics and explore, engage, and interact with the works!

I remember Andrea's tears while we were walking towards his destroyed house that he was seeing for the first time since the explosion.

“All the war memories rushed back...

We invited musician and producer Aby Fulani to create a playlist inspired by the works of Liz Johnson Artur. Offering a fresh way to experience the exhibition, music adds new dimensions to the essence of Liz's work, especially while museum doors are closed.

Artist ShuShu Sieberns tries to create a bridge between two different worlds: one where queer identity and traditional Russian family values can coexist alongside each other. The exhibition

The award-winning Foam Talent Digital is back this year on 26 August with Talent 2021.&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/foam-talent-2021-digital">Foam Talent 2021&nbsp;|&nbsp;</a><a href="/museum/programme/foam-talent-2021-digital">Digital</a>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;multi-media platform showcasing the work of 20 artists that were selected through the annual Foam Talent Call. Their projects are translated&nbsp;into the digital realm, supported by audio, video and interactive elements. Liberating the photographs from their frames and taking them beyond the museum walls, the exhibition pushes the boundaries of the medium and explores the outlines of its future form.&nbsp;

Susanne Khalil Yusef (b. 1984) considers herself to be Palestinian. Her grandparents fled Jaffa in 1948 and were determined to return. They never did. Khalil Yusef&rsquo;s Palestinian heritage is central to her highly personal artwork through which she addresses urgent topics such as displacement, human rights and identity. She creates small and expansive multimedia installations inspired by stories derived from various archives, found objects and personal encounters. The objects, characters, colors and forms have a meaning and play their own part in the story she wants to convey.

Susanne Khalil Yusef was born in 1984 in Germany and has lived in the Netherlands from when she was a teenager. She obtained her masters degree in 2018 at St. Joost Academy in 's-Hertogenbosch. During her bachelor she studied at the International Academy of Arts in Ramallah, Palestine for a semester. Her work has been exhibited at Textiel Museum Tilburg, Museum Arnhem and Slash Gallery, part of WORM in Rotterdam. Recently Khalil Yusef&rsquo;s art has been added to the permanent collections of museum Arnhem and textielmuseum Tilburg.

From 3 May, Foam presents the elusive and mysterious work of Lilian Kreutzberger in the Foam 3h exhibition Whiteandgold &amp;&amp; Blackandblue.

Lilian Kreutzberger&nbsp;(1984, Netherlands) is trained as a painter but in her conceptual projects, she combines photographic techniques with other media such as sculpture and architecture. In her project Whiteandgold &amp;&amp; Blackandblue, the artist investigates the experience of material and space in the digital domain. Her multimedia work, which has a strong photographic dimension, is elusive and mysterious, and at the same time very tangible. Foam 3h displays a combination of reliefs, sculptural works and collages.

Foam is proud to present the first museum solo exhibition of the German-American artist Rebecca Sampson (1984). Her work is a photographic study of the daily life of Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong. With little to no leisure time or personal space, these labour migrants construct a parallel identity using social media channels. Far from home and in a completely female subculture, the women develop an ambiguous sexual identity. Sampson portrays this population in a layered multi-media narrative, consisting of documentary photography, social media footage, and text.
On the evening of the opening, the photographer presents her new book&nbsp;Apples for Sale, in which she captures the shadow existence of these women. Sampson will go into conversation with Foam curator Hinde Haest about her observations in Hong Kong and her inventive approach to documentary photography.

 Public opening: Rebecca Sampson

On the occasion of the exhibition Rebecca Sampson - Apples for Sale, the artist will be presenting her new book Apples for Sale (2018) during the exhibition opening.

The work of the German-American artist Rebecca Sampson (1984) is a photographic study of the daily life of Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong. With little to no leisure time or personal space, these labour migrants construct a parallel identity using social media channels. Far from home and in a completely female subculture, the women develop an ambiguous sexual identity. Sampson portrays this population in a layered multi-media narrative, consisting of documentary photography, social media footage, and text.

Sampson will go into conversation with Foam curator Hinde Haest about her observations in Hong Kong and her inventive approach to documentary photography.
The evening is organised in the context of Sampson's first solo museum exhibition, which is on show until 16 December 2018 at Foam 3h.

The research for the project Apples for Sale was funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung in cooperation with the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin and within the context of the program Grenzg&auml;nger China &ndash; Deutschland.&nbsp;

FLORENTINE RIEM VIS STIPENDUM&nbsp; Rebecca Sampson is the second recipient of the Florentine Riem Vis Grant, which was established in memory of Florentine Riem Vis (1959-2016). The grant is awarded annually with the goal of supporting young photographic talent in the development of their artistic career.
ABOUT REBECCA SAMPSON Rebecca Sampson (Germany, 1984) studied photography at Ostkreuzsch&uuml;le - School of Photography and Design in Berlin. Her work has been exhibited internationally and was part of the exhibition Gute Aussichten Deluxe in Deichtorhallen / Haus der Photographie Hamburg in 2018. She is currently working on a science and art project with the Technical University in Berlin, and is a resident at the Goethe Institute. This year her first book Apples for Sale was published by Kerber Verlag. Sampson lives and works in Berlin.
