Jan Hoek

Jan Hoek photographs amateur models: mentally ill people in Africa who look like kings, a girl with no arms and legs who constantly wants to be photographed, a heroin addict who dreams to be a model.

The photoshoot is never what he expects; model and photographer always have different expectations. The model actually wants sex while Jan Hoek wants to photograph&nbsp;the dog; the model tries to be as glamorous as possible, while Jan wants to picture the decay.
In the film Me &amp; My Models Jan shares his stories about the nasty, funny, painful or touching things that happen when you photograph people.
Jan Hoek: "I believe there is always a certain degree of ethics involved in photography. It is almost impossible to take photographs of people without consciously, or unconsciously, crossing boundaries and with things happening that you don&rsquo;t want or expect. I feel this is often covered up in photography, while I would like to show it."
ABOUT JAN HOEK Jan Hoek (1984) is an artist and writer. At the age of 12 he published his first text. He wrote for Spunk, Mister Motley, ELLEgirl, Club Donny, NRC Handelsblad, nrc.next, Parool, L'GAY, PSY and Vice. At the age of 24 Jan Hoek started at the Image and Language department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2012 he graduated with the film Me &amp; My Models.&nbsp;

De tentoonstelling&nbsp;Magnum Contact Sheets&nbsp;geeft aan de hand van originele contactvellen inzicht in het werkproces van &rsquo;s werelds beroemdste journalistieke fotografen. De tentoonstelling biedt een chronologisch overzicht van markante historische momenten vanaf de jaren '30 tot 2010. Maar hoe is dat ene iconische beeld tot stand gekomen? En welke momenten gingen daar aan vooraf?
Bezoek samen met een (beeld)redacteur de tentoonstelling en bekijk hoe deze beelden tot stand zijn gekomen. Niet alleen de momenten v&oacute;&oacute;r en net na het maken van die ene iconische foto zijn te zien, maar ook de aantekeningen van de fotograaf die het beslissende moment op het vel markeerden, vaak lang nadat de foto was geschoten. Tijdens de rondleiding zal de redacteur meer vertellen over de kracht van het beeld en zijn of haar persoonlijke ervaringen.
PROGRAMMA De rondleiding&nbsp;Redacteur aan het woord&nbsp;vindt elke donderdag in oktober plaats en start om 18.30 in Foam. Aanmelding is wenselijk om teleurstelling te voorkomen. Per rondleiding is er plek voor 15 personen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OVER JAN HOEK Jan Hoek (1984) is naast redacteur ook kunstenaar. Op zijn 24e startte hij een studie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (Beeld en Taal). In 2012 studeerde hij af met de film Me &amp; My Models. Zijn werk is in Nederland tentoongesteld in onder andere Foam, UNSEEN en bij zijn galerie Galerie Ron Mandos, internationaal had hij tentoonstellingen in Shenzhen (China), St. Petersburg (Rusland), Jakarta (Indonesi&euml;), Miami (U.S.), Istanbul (Turkij&euml;), Londen (UK) en vele andere plekken.
Daarnaast schrijft en fotografeert hij onder andere voor NRC Handelsblad, Het Parool, NRC.Next, Vrij Nederland, Mister Motley en Vice. In 2013 kwam van Jan Hoek het boekje&nbsp;Marktplaatspo&euml;zie&nbsp;uit met daarin de meest ontroerende advertenties die hij vond op Marktplaats. In 2014 verscheen bij Art Paper Editions het fotoboek&nbsp;New Ways Of Photographing The New Masai.

Jan Hoek is a visual artist whose work often reveals a special yet ambiguous relationship between the photographer and his models. His series document his encounters with people, exposing simultaneously the weird, funny, painful, or touching stories that arose in this context. This portrait is taken from the series 

: a colloquial name given to Ethiopia’s homeless who suffer mental illnesses. Hoek was initially attracted to their curious and flamboyant fashion style, which reminded him of kings or emperors. The photoshoot created space to acknowledge and play with the royal feeling exuding from these remarkable individuals.

Adopting a unique approach to his work, Hoek always leaves room for the unexpected, as well as for the unwanted. He crosses traditional boundaries and challenges viewers, introducing us to the unconventional characters that became his models.

Foam presents an in-depth evening about the portraits of Seydou Ke&iuml;ta.

Fashion perspective: Professor Carol Tulloch From the very start of his studio practice, Seydou Ke&iuml;ta offered his customers a wide array of props with which to have their portrait taken: from western dress items to accessories such as fake glasses, bow ties, watches, radios, telephones and vehicles. Many of his customers made playful use of these items to create modern and fashion-conscious portraits of themselves. Carol Tulloch is Professor of Dress, Diaspora and Transnationalism at the University of the Arts London who currently focuses on the presentation of self through the styled black body. This includes cross-cultural and transnational relations, cultural heritage, autobiography, personal archives and what she calls &lsquo;style narratives&rsquo;. Tulloch combines these approaches to consider how black people negotiate their sense of self within various cultural and social contexts, locally, nationally and internationally. From this perspective, she will shine a light on Seydou Ke&iuml;ta&rsquo;s portraits.&nbsp;
Artist perspective: Jan Hoek Ke&iuml;ta's portraits are completely detached from Western traditions and depict a contemporary image of Malian urban society in the 1950s and 1960s. In contrast to the many Western photographers who had previously portrayed Africans as part of a European ideal, Seydou Ke&iuml;ta's portraits are a collaboration between the portrayed and the photographer. When artist Jan Hoek published his&nbsp;book&nbsp;New Ways of Photographing The New Masai (Idea Books) in which he tried to create a visual counter-reply to the clich&eacute; image of the jumping Maasai, he received positive as well as negative feedback. Although he tried to disprove stereotyping, he still worked in a stereotypical historical tradition in which Westerners determine how African subjects such as the Maasai are represented. In his new book My Maasai (Art Paper Editions, 2017) Jan Hoek places that position in the hands of the Maasai people: his publication does not contain his photographs, but those of East African photographers and their own vision of the Maasai. Based on this learning process from his own artistic practice, Jan Hoek will reflect on the importance of Seydou Ke&iuml;ta's oeuvre.&nbsp; Cultural-historical perspective: Dr. Annette Schmidt The work of Seydou Ke&iuml;ta reflects a period of of transition for Bamako, from a cosmopolitan city in a French colony to the proud capital of an independent Mali. Dr. Annette Schmidt is curator of the Africa department in the Museum of Ethnology, the Tropenmuseum, the Africa Museum and the Wereldmuseum. She graduated on a regional archaeological research project in Mali, lived there for 7 years and continued her affinity with the country by leading various heritage projects in collaboration with the Malian Ministry of Culture.&nbsp;With her knowledge of the history and culture of Mali, she will explain the cultural meaning of various props in the photos of Seydou Ke&iuml;ta and tell us more about the time in which he worked.

CBTV-LIVE |&nbsp;8.30pm, 9.30pm, 10.30pm and 11.30pm As part of the museum's 15th anniversary, Foam is organising a broad range of activities under the title Collaborate!. The collaboration with the academies KABK (NL) and ECAL (CH) brought together the duo Jonathan Hielkema and Vincent Levrat. Their initially mandatory collaboration evolved into the birth of a television channel: CBTV (Collaborate! TV). During Museumnacht, they exchange recordings and live interviews with talents about their own collaborations and involve visitors in the process of their live productions.

Splashed around the city over the past few weeks, you couldn&rsquo;t have missed the head-turning work of photographer Jan Hoek and stylist Duran Lantink. Hoek and Lantink joined forces to develop this year&rsquo;s Museumnacht campaign images. The two are long affiliated with Foam, going as far back as 2013 with Hoek&rsquo;s solo exhibition at Foam 3h and last year the popular Sistaaz of the Castle project presented by Foam and FashionWeek Amsterdam. During Museumnacht Hoek and Lantink will discuss their collaborative energy and share a preview of their upcoming project.

KERT&Eacute;SZ PHOTOBOOTH | 7pm - 2am Using reflections, doubles and shadows, Andr&eacute; Kert&eacute;sz continually plays with the suggestion of presence and absence, the difference between what we see and what we feel. His visual language made him into a leading figure of the Parisian avant-garde. Draw inspiration from the work on view in the exhibition before heading over to the special&nbsp;photobooth where you can be photographed in Kert&eacute;sz style.

Both artists focus on collaboration and on engagement with others.&nbsp;The starting point for the exhibition is the Indonesian tradition of gotong royong. In Indonesian society, the communal spirit is a quintessential aspect of culture. Museumnacht at Foam

Foam presents a selection of photographs from the collection at OBA, the Amsterdam Public Library.

From 2&nbsp;September until 30 November 2016, Foam presents the exhibition Reading Images in OBA as a part of educational project&nbsp;<a href="/nl/over-ons/samenwerkingsprojecten/amsterdam-vertelt" target="_blank">Amsterdam Vertelt.</a>
The meaning of a photo is often not as clear as it seems. We can read the image, but do we know how to read a visual image? What is a picture, an image anyway? Does it tell us all the same story, or do we look at it from different points of view?
The photographer has chosen a specific framework, a particular composition, a particular exposure. The final image is a snapshot, and thus explains only a fraction of the story. What happened before this shot? And what will happen one second later? What is the effect of the image on us, as an audience?

ABOUT THE FOAM COLLECTION Foam exhibits photographs of young talents and follows them through the course of their careers. The collection now has more than 500 works and reflects the complexity of contemporary photography; many of the works sit on the boundary of the medium and show interactions with video art and sculpture.

Opening OBA & Foam: Reading Images

We are pleased to invite you to attend the opening of the photography exhibition Look Twice: Pink Edition on July 28 in Foam Caf&eacute; Amsterdam.

During <a href="/museum/programme/look-twice-pink-edition">Look Twice: Pink Edition</a>&nbsp;two generations of the LGBT-community&nbsp;are brought&nbsp;into contact with each other.&nbsp;
On 16 and 23 July 2016,&nbsp;workshops were held in which two generations of LGBT+ took photographs&nbsp;together. This resulted in some&nbsp;incredibly special encounters and beautiful pictures. The best results of the workshops Look Twice: Pink Edition will be shown&nbsp;in Foam Cafe and stay&nbsp;on display&nbsp;until August 7, the end of EuroPride.

Opening Look Twice: Pink Edition

Photographer Jan Hoek (1984, NL) and fashion designer Duran Lantink (1987, NL) present Sistaaz of the Castle, a project about the colourful looks of transgender sex workers that roam the streets of Cape Town, South Africa.

Together they created a series of photographs and a fashion collection around their fashionable appearances, and their ability to make the most exuberant creations of everything they find. From 13 January till 20 January the project will be presented in Foam.
The local sex workers&rsquo; organisation, S.W.E.A.T., gave Jan Hoek and Duran Lantink the opportunity to meet and collaborate with their transgender support group Sistaazhood. For this project, Hoek and Lantink zoom in on six girls from the community: Coco (25), Cleopatra (23) Sulaiga (30), Gabby (29) Flavinia (33) and Joan Collins (57).
Most of the girls are homeless, living under a bridge beside the castle of Cape Town. Jan Hoek photographed their lives and their outfits. The photos also serve as a lookbook for the collection of Duran Lantink. The designer was inspired by the creative ability of the girls to produce beautiful creations from found pieces of garments. He recognised a similarity to his own process, using different recycling methods and collage techniques.
The artists were also interested in how the girls would want to look like if they had unlimited possibilities. One of the girls would like to work in a luxurious Victorian brothel. The 57-year-old Joan Collins dreams of a wedding dress and a third wants to become Miss Africa. All these fantasies are translated into a dream-couture capsule collection by Lantink, which is also photographed by Hoek.
In addition to the fashion show and exhibition, a printed publication (APE) will be published and distributed worldwide in March 2016. Eventually, they will return to South Africa to present the Sistaaz of the Castle project on its original site. Usually, transgender sex workers are presented victim or as perpetrator in the South African media. The girls of Sistaazhood expressed their wish to be seen positively in the media.
ABOUT JAN HOEK Jan Hoek (1984) photographs amateur models, homeless people in Africa who look like kings, a girl with no arms and legs that constantly wants to be photographed, heroin addicts with a modelling dream, or people he found through an advertisement on Marktplaats, the Dutch online marketplace. Jan Hoek graduated in 2012 from the Image and Language program at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. His first solo exhibition, Me &amp; My Models, was held at Foam 3h. In 2014 his work was part of the groupexhibition The Space Between Us which was presented at Felix&amp;Foam in Amsterdam and the He Xianging Art Museum in Shenzhen, China. His work has been published in Foam Magazine, Vice, Mister Motley, GUP, NRC Handelsblad and Het Parool. Jan also exhibited in Antwerp, Istanbul, St. Petersburg, Jakarta, Shenzhen, Lagos, Miami, London and New York. Jan Hoek is represented by Gallery Ron Mandos in Amsterdam.
ABOUT DURAN LANTINK Duran Lantink (1987) is the wild child of fashion in the Netherlands. In 2013 he graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and is now following the Master&rsquo;s program Fashion Matter at the Sandberg Institute. His collections, styling and exhibitions contain honest messages and are a dizzying remix of anything that inspires him. He received national and international acclaim for his towering 3D printed shoes. They have been exhibited at the Louvre in Paris and the MET in New York, among other places. As a stylist and designer, Duran has worked for several magazines, including Vogue, Glamcult and D&amp;A Mexico.
The collection is presented during FashionWeek Amsterdam at the Gashouder on January 16 at 19:00. The MBFWA OFF SCHEDULE Foam exhibition opens on January 13 at 17:30 and is on view until 20 January 2016.

The exhibition gives an overview of the exceptional oeuvre of American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) who died at a young age. ABOUT FRANCESCA WOODMAN. ON BEING AN ANGEL Before committing suicide at the age of twenty-two, Woodman explored themes such as gender, representation, sexuality and corporality. She used photography as an extremely personal means of expression, as if wearing her skin inside out. Woodman&rsquo;s photographs showcase a range of symbolist and surrealist influences, and in many cases they evoke oppressive feelings. Tellgren is a committee member of the &lsquo;Nordic Network for the History and Aesthetics of Photography&rsquo; and is the Associate Editor of Konsthistorisk tidskrift/Journal of Art History. She previously curated the Arbus, Model, Str&ouml;mholm exhibition and was the editor of the catalogue with the same title, published in 2005 by Steidl. ABOUT KIM KNOPPERS Kim Knoppers (1976) has been a curator at Foam Museum since 2011. She studied art history at the University of Amsterdam. She was previously curator at De Beyerd Center of Contemporary Art and has also worked as a freelance curator. She has curated group exhibitions including Remind (2003), Exotics (2008), Snow is White (2010, together with Joris Jansen) and Re-Search (2012), and solo exhibitions by WassinkLundgren, Onorato &amp; Krebs, Jan Hoek, Lorenzo Vitturi, Jan Rosseel, JH Engstr&ouml;m, Geert Goiris, Broomberg &amp; Chanarin, Anne de Vries and Paul Bogaers amongst others. TUSSEN DROOM EN DAAD Foam presenteert in de tentoonstelling&nbsp;<a href="/nl/museum/programma/magnum-contact-sheets">Magnum Contact Sheets</a>&nbsp;het verhaal achter beroemde foto&rsquo;s van iconische personen en gebeurtenissen, grote dromen en historische daden, goed &egrave;n kwaad. OVER&nbsp;STERRE SPRENGERS Sterre Sprengers (1984) is chef beeldredactie van De Correspondent. Ook schrijft ze over fotografie, beeldvorming en haar werk als beeldredacteur. Sterre studeerde documentaire fotografie. Al tijdens haar studie werkte zij als beeldredacteur bij nrc.next. Na haar opleiding was zij daar vijf jaar chef van de beeldredactie en schreef over fotografie voor deze krant. Daarnaast is Sterre gastdocent aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag, juryvoorzitter van het Steenbergen Stipendium en mede-auteur van het boek&nbsp;ED IT - the substantial system for photographic archive maintenance.

OVER NATALIA TORET Na haar opleiding aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag ging Natalia Toret (1976) als freelancer werken aan foto-opdrachten voor tijdschriften en kranten. Opdrachtgevers waren o.a.: Nieuwe Revu, Cosmopolitan, Viva, voetbalmaandblad Johan, Intermediair, Hollands Diep en Hard Gras.&nbsp; Natalia vervolgde haar carri&egrave;re als projectco&ouml;rdinator bij fotoagentschap Hollandse Hoogte.&nbsp;Vanaf 2012 is Natalia werkzaam als beeldredacteur bij NRC Handelsblad.

2015 marks the first year Unseen introduces Unseen Festival &ndash; an extended festival programme in the city of Amsterdam that celebrates photography in all its forms.

Unseen Festival is a 10-day celebration of photography in Amsterdam. From the 18th to the 27th of September 2015, Unseen collaborates with many of the city&rsquo;s institutions, academies, artists, and initiatives using photography in innovative and unconventional ways to create a programme that is sure to challenge, excite and inspire.
Over the past three years, Unseen has established an acclaimed photography fair, as well as an on-site festival programme at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.&nbsp;
THE FESTIVAL HEART The heart of Unseen Festival remains on-site at the Westergasfabriek and will include the Unseen Living Room, the Unseen Book Market, the Unseen Collection, an exhibition of the Foam Talents 2015, Artist Recipes, and the immersive installation, Panorama Carland by Jan Hoek. The on-site activities will take place during Unseen Photo Fair from Friday the 18th to Sunday the 20th of September.
The Unseen Living Room &ndash; an informal meeting place for the exchange of dialogue and ideas &ndash; promises yet again to dive into pressing current issues within photography. This year, visitors can attend talks by talented artists, discussions on what&rsquo;s next regarding photographic institutions, scouting talent and on photography online and in print. Speakers include James Reid (Wallpaper Magazine), Duncan Forbes (Museum Winterthur), American based collectors Sondra Gilman &amp; Celso Gonzalez-Falla, Brad Feuerhelm (American Suburb X), and many more. On Friday the 18th of September, the winner of the Unseen Dummy Award 2015 will be announced at the Unseen Book Market. On Saturday, Unseen visitors can witness the making of a photo book with Self Publish, Be Happy. For the duration of 24 hours, ten artists will respond to each other&rsquo;s work across three continents with the goal of producing one collective publication. Keep an eye on the Unseen website for a detailed programme on public signings and book launches.
Newly introduced this year are the Artist Recipes, an on-site dining experience on Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th, where various chosen artists will determine the menu for the evening. The dinners will be organised at Westergasterras, where the recipes and the link to the artist&rsquo;s body of work will be the main topic of the evening.
THE CITY The extended Unseen Festival will be taking place at more than 38 locations throughout the city of Amsterdam from the 18th to the 27th of September. In addition to the Festival Heart, the programme consists of four different themes: Hidden Treasures, Open Doors, Cultural Institutions, and the Neighbourhood Project.
The Hidden Treasures are a number of exclusive commissions and projects housed in a range of secret spots and unconventional spaces across the city, which will be opened exclusively for the visitors of Unseen. These include an exhibition at the newly renovated exhibition space of Amsterdam&rsquo;s stock exchange, a film by Alexander Basile at the Stenen Hoofd, various installations at the Prinsengracht&rsquo;s 19th Century former hospital, exhibitions by Ola Lanko and Heikki Kaski at the former Citro&euml;n Garage, and the Korean exhibition Lies of Lies at the Huis met de Hoofden.
A range of corporate and private collections, artist studios, hotels and other organisations are joining in on the festivities by opening their doors to the public. Collections include, an exhibition at the Herengracht office of the ING Bank, World Press Photo at the World Press Photo office, and many others. Additionally, a selection of artists will open their studios for the public.
Teaming up with the best of Amsterdam&rsquo;s art establishments, the Cultural Institutions programme draws together an eclectic range of exhibitions programmed around photography on the occasion of Unseen Festival. These include the Stedelijk Museum, Huis Marseille, Eye Filmmuseum, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond, and Huize Frankendael. The Prins Claus Fund Gallery will bring together artists from the Arab region in Return of the Soul during Unseen Festival.
In addition, emerging talents from this year&rsquo;s <a href="http://shop.foam.org/en/foam-magazine-foam-magazine-42-talent-2015.html">Foam Talent Issue</a> inhabit the Staatsliedenbuurt &ndash; a residential area adjacent to the Westergasfabriek &ndash; and collaborate with locals to bring photography into community hubs across the area.
