Jan Hoek

Jan Hoek photographs amateur models: mentally ill people in Africa who look like kings, a girl with no arms and legs who constantly wants to be photographed, a heroin addict who dreams to be a model.

The photoshoot is never what he expects; model and photographer always have different expectations. The model actually wants sex while Jan Hoek wants to photograph&nbsp;the dog; the model tries to be as glamorous as possible, while Jan wants to picture the decay.
In the film Me &amp; My Models Jan shares his stories about the nasty, funny, painful or touching things that happen when you photograph people.
Jan Hoek: "I believe there is always a certain degree of ethics involved in photography. It is almost impossible to take photographs of people without consciously, or unconsciously, crossing boundaries and with things happening that you don&rsquo;t want or expect. I feel this is often covered up in photography, while I would like to show it."
ABOUT JAN HOEK Jan Hoek (1984) is an artist and writer. At the age of 12 he published his first text. He wrote for Spunk, Mister Motley, ELLEgirl, Club Donny, NRC Handelsblad, nrc.next, Parool, L'GAY, PSY and Vice. At the age of 24 Jan Hoek started at the Image and Language department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2012 he graduated with the film Me &amp; My Models.&nbsp;

De tentoonstelling&nbsp;Magnum Contact Sheets&nbsp;geeft aan de hand van originele contactvellen inzicht in het werkproces van &rsquo;s werelds beroemdste journalistieke fotografen. De tentoonstelling biedt een chronologisch overzicht van markante historische momenten vanaf de jaren '30 tot 2010. Maar hoe is dat ene iconische beeld tot stand gekomen? En welke momenten gingen daar aan vooraf?
Bezoek samen met een (beeld)redacteur de tentoonstelling en bekijk hoe deze beelden tot stand zijn gekomen. Niet alleen de momenten v&oacute;&oacute;r en net na het maken van die ene iconische foto zijn te zien, maar ook de aantekeningen van de fotograaf die het beslissende moment op het vel markeerden, vaak lang nadat de foto was geschoten. Tijdens de rondleiding zal de redacteur meer vertellen over de kracht van het beeld en zijn of haar persoonlijke ervaringen.
PROGRAMMA De rondleiding&nbsp;Redacteur aan het woord&nbsp;vindt elke donderdag in oktober plaats en start om 18.30 in Foam. Aanmelding is wenselijk om teleurstelling te voorkomen. Per rondleiding is er plek voor 15 personen.&nbsp;&nbsp;

OVER JAN HOEK Jan Hoek (1984) is naast redacteur ook kunstenaar. Op zijn 24e startte hij een studie aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (Beeld en Taal). In 2012 studeerde hij af met de film Me &amp; My Models. Zijn werk is in Nederland tentoongesteld in onder andere Foam, UNSEEN en bij zijn galerie Galerie Ron Mandos, internationaal had hij tentoonstellingen in Shenzhen (China), St. Petersburg (Rusland), Jakarta (Indonesi&euml;), Miami (U.S.), Istanbul (Turkij&euml;), Londen (UK) en vele andere plekken.
Daarnaast schrijft en fotografeert hij onder andere voor NRC Handelsblad, Het Parool, NRC.Next, Vrij Nederland, Mister Motley en Vice. In 2013 kwam van Jan Hoek het boekje&nbsp;Marktplaatspo&euml;zie&nbsp;uit met daarin de meest ontroerende advertenties die hij vond op Marktplaats. In 2014 verscheen bij Art Paper Editions het fotoboek&nbsp;New Ways Of Photographing The New Masai.

Jan Hoek is a visual artist whose work often reveals a special yet ambiguous relationship between the photographer and his models. His series document his encounters with people, exposing simultaneously the weird, funny, painful, or touching stories that arose in this context. This portrait is taken from the series 

: a colloquial name given to Ethiopia’s homeless who suffer mental illnesses. Hoek was initially attracted to their curious and flamboyant fashion style, which reminded him of kings or emperors. The photoshoot created space to acknowledge and play with the royal feeling exuding from these remarkable individuals.

Adopting a unique approach to his work, Hoek always leaves room for the unexpected, as well as for the unwanted. He crosses traditional boundaries and challenges viewers, introducing us to the unconventional characters that became his models.
