Gemaakt door Manon Wertenbroek in 2014. Het kunstwerk is een pigmentprint op Hahnemuhle Fine Art 285gr, op aluminium, op hout en met verf, met een afmeting van 90,5 x 72 cm.

De felle kleuren en cartooneske lijnen op het lichaam van het model creëren een speels beeld. Tegelijkertijd zou de elegante houding van het model je aan een klassiek sculptuur uit de Renaissance-kunst kunnen doen denken. In 

 combineert Manon Wertenbroek beeldhouwkunst met het fotografisch medium. Door haar model te verwerken in allerlei composities van kleuren, cirkels, blokken, getallen, punten en kaders, verkent Manon Wertenbroek een tamelijk onconventionele manier van portretteren. De jongeman op de foto’s is haar broer. In hun jeugd waren ze erg hecht, maar naarmate ze ouder werden groeiden ze uit elkaar. De totstandkoming van deze serie was voor Wertenbroek een manier om de band met haar broer weer aan te halen. Desalniettemin herkent haar broer zichzelf niet in de portretten, waardoor deze eerder haar projectie verbeelden dan zijn werkelijke zelf. 

Manon Wertenbroek was part of the 2015 Foam Talent selection. Her image 

served as the cover image for the talent issue of Foam Magazine.

Gemaakt door Sara Cwynar in 2012. Het kunstwerk is een c-print met een afmeting van 37 x 30 cm.

Collages zijn een regelmatig terugkerende techniek in het werk van Sara Cwynar. Door bestaande voorwerpen en artefacten samen te voegen tot een nieuwe visuele compositie speelt Cwynar met de betekenis en rol die visueel materiaal in onze hedendaagse samenleving spelen. Ze verzamelt alledaagse voorwerpen die ooit voor een bepaald doel zijn gemaakt en herschikt ze om zo een nieuw narratief te creëren. Waarom verzamelen mensen dingen? Hoe verhouden deze voorwerpen zich tot onze herinneringen? Door dit te onderzoeken reflecteert Cwynar op de manier waarop beelden en voorwerpen onze ervaringen vormen – en de wereld om ons heen.

Gemaakt door Stephen Gill. Het kunstwerk is een pigmentprint op Canson Platine Fiber Rag met een afmeting van 78,6 x 60,8 cm.

Wat ervaar je wanneer je kijkt naar de kleuren en texturen in deze foto? Door de afwezigheid van een duidelijk onderwerp wordt de toeschouwer meegenomen in een spel van warme kleuren en abstract vormen. In plaats van een verhaal te vertellen, lijkt deze foto eerder bedoelt om een gevoel over te brengen. 

 waarin Gill intensiteit van het stadsleven in de Londense wijk Hackney probeert te visualiseren. In deze serie experimenteerde kunstenaar Stephen Gill met het fotografische proces door de negatieven in energiedrank te weken. Het resultaat is een dromerig beeld waarin bijna alle sporen van het originele beeld zijn verdwenen. 

 is als een visueel gedicht, waarbij de boodschap verscholen ligt onder het oppervlak.

Bij analoge fotografie wordt een ‘negatief’ beeld, waarin de kleuren omgekeerd zijn, in de donkere kamer omgezet naar een zogenaamd positief beeld – de uiteindelijke foto. Dit is een technisch proces met veel handelingen. Kunstenaar Stephen Gill speelt met dit proces door de stappen te veranderen. In zijn serie 

 doet hij dit door het negatief onder te dompelen in energiedrank. Hierdoor ontstaat niet alleen een prachtig kleuren palette op het fotonegatief, maar kan Gill ook de foto vervormen. De zoete drank weekt namelijk de lichtgevoelige laag los van de foto, waardoor hij deze met een penseel kan bewerken. In dit geval heeft de bewerking geleid tot een bijna spookachtig portret met unieke kleuren en een fascinerende textuur. Het uiteindelijke beeld is een foto van het bewerkte negatief.

Na veertien jaar de Londense wijk Hackney te hebben vastgelegd, voelde kunstenaar Stephen Gill dat zijn werk iets miste. Hoe vang je de intensiteit van het drukke stadsleven in een afbeelding? Door te experimenteren bij zowel het maken als het ontwikkelen van zijn analoge foto’s, kwam hij tot nieuwe methoden om dit gevoel in beeld te brengen. In de serie 

 experimenteerde Gill bijvoorbeeld met energiedrank: de negatieven liet hij weken in deze zoete vloeistof, wat de lichtgevoelige laag op de filmrol deed verzachten. Het resultaat is een abstract beeld met prachtige warme kleuren, zoals te zien is in deze afbeelding. Welk gevoel krijg jij bij deze foto?

Hoe benaderen fotografen het medium op vernieuwende manieren? Tal van kunstenaars experimenteren met fotografische technieken om zo de beperkingen van het medium te omzeilen en zo de grenzen van het fotografie verleggen. 

 gemaakt door de Engelse kunstenaar Stephen Gill. Door het combineren van verschillende perspectieven–groot versus klein, ver versus dichtbij–speelt Gill met de schaal van de onderwerpen in zijn foto’s. De toevoeging van de meetlat aan de collage versterkt dit effect nog meer door te suggereren dat de takken in de achtergrond in dezelfde orde van grootte zitten als de pissebedden. Door de details te benadrukken, lijkt Gill de kijker uit te nodigen om na te denken over relatie tussen mens en natuur en hoe andere organismen de wereld om ons heen begrijpen.

Kijk eens tien seconden naar dit werk – wat valt je op? Het waterlandschap, de glimlachende vrouw, of wellicht de abstracte vormen op de voorgrond? Het werk van Stephen Gill heeft wat tijd nodig om zich te laten doorgronden. Door meerdere negatieven over elkaar heen te leggen tijdens het ontwikkelen van de foto’s, ontstaat er een collage van verschillende beelden.  

Op de resulterende collage van het kalme landschap en de lachende vrouw ligt echter nog een laag: abstracte vormen die nog het meest lijken op het beeld dat je ziet onder een microscoop. Deze sporen zijn het resultaat van objecten die Gill opzettelijk in zijn camera plaatste voorafgaand aan het fotograferen. Hiermee probeert hij verwarring te veroorzaken in de schaalverhoudingen tussen de verschillende beelden. Deze unieke werkwijze benadrukt de verfijnde en verontrustende schoonheid van Gill's fotografie, waardoor elk detail op een verrassende manier in een nieuw licht komt te staan.

When Jean-Vincent Simonet came across the book 

 (The Songs of Maldoror), he felt hugely attracted to the dark, theatrical and transgressive character. The cutting-edge book praising youth revolt, blasphemy and the victory of dream over reality was published in 1869 by Comte de Lautréamont. Simonet decided to revive the literary enigma. His photographs are based on the atmosphere it evokes: gothic angels provided with dramatic blue photoshopped skies full of stars and dead branches merged into pink and blue shapes that look like hairs. The eclectic style inspired him to shift between analogue and digital, using digital techniques to glitch and merge photographs. This enables the mysterious atmosphere of the book to become tangible in the pictures. That the book was once banned because of its blasphemous character, comes as no surprise.

Foam proudly presents the work of a new generation of artists in the group exhibition 

. The 20 participating photographers address the pressing problems of our times. Together, they explore and extend the boundaries of what photography is today.   

As a diverse group of artists, each of them presents their own visual language. Through their works, they critically look at the world around us. They use the photographic medium to question collective affairs and ongoing issues happening in the world. At the same time, they explore how these issues have an impact on a personal level, moving between a local, historical, symbolic, emotional and bodily perspective. 

This group of artists uses a wide range of photographic genres to tell their stories. With portraiture and documentary photography, digital created images and archival material, the talents create a space for the viewer to sit with situations and current events, to reflect and respond to.   

Complementing the physical experience at Foam, this digital exhibition offers a deeper look at the Talents and their works. What goes on behind the surface? What is the inspiration? What techniques are used? This exhibition combines artistic context with educational perspectives. Read, see, and hear more about the themes and topics and explore, engage, and interact with the works!
