The early history of photography is largely dominated by men while women have always been at the forefront of innovation and experimentation in photography. How We See, published by 10x10 Photobooks, is an attempt to shift the focus of the photographic canon towards female makers, whose influence on the development of photography was (and arguably still is) long underappreciated.

PROGRAMME AND SPEAKERS
During the evening historic and contemporary examples of important photobooks (both famous and forgotten) by female makers will be introduced, followed by a discussion on the need to emphasise female contributions to the photographic canon.

• Russet Lederman (researcher, collector and initiator of How We See and 10x10 Photobooks).

Russet Lederman will give a brief introduction of How We See, and go into conversation with Delphine Bedel about the blank spots in the history of photography when it comes to the inclusion of women in the photographic canon. Batia Suter will present her own experimental book-making practice in a Q&A with Foam curator Hinde Haest. Case study will be Suter’s famous publication Parallel Encyclopedia #2 (2016), which is reminiscent of the very first photobook by (female) photographer and botanist Anna Atkins, called Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843–1853). The work of Suter was nominated for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize (2018) and her book is featured in How We See.

The presentation and discussion will be followed by questions from the audience and drinks.
