Photography Workshops by Koos Breukel
As part of the Meet the Artist exhibition, Koos Breukel presents a series of photography workshops where participants can work alongside the artist. Set in a specially designed photo studio within the exhibition, participants can choose to shoot in the studio or, weather permitting, in the garden. Each workshop is inspired by the style of a photographer who has played a significant role in Breukel’s artistic journey.
During the workshops, he is joined by guest photographer and specialist in noble print techniques, Daphne Wageman, providing participants with expert guidance and insight.
Programme
Koos Breukel will present a talk exploring the connections between Richard Avedon and Andy Warhol. Under his guidance, participants will create fashion photography inspired by Avedon and document the process in the style of Warhol using Polaroids. In addition to Polaroids, participants will also work with a large-format camera. During a coffee and tea break, Breukel’s assistant will develop the negatives, and the final results will be shared at the end of the workshop.
Judith Joy Ross and Dorothea Lange focused on socially conscious themes in America, often using labour-intensive large-format cameras like the Graflex camera. During this workshop, participants will use an original Graflex camera to create portraits on 4x5-inch analogue sheet film.
Both Penn and Curtis are renowned for photographing in mobile studios on location, a concept that inspired Koos Breukel’s Meet the Artist exhibition. This workshop takes it a step further into the past, photographing unexposed glass negatives using a wooden plate camera. Expect long exposure times, darkroom development, and a final result of an 18x25cm large-format glass negative.
A webcam will allow participants to watch the development process live in the darkroom, and the glass negatives will be presented at the end of the workshop.
Diane Arbus and Weegee captured fleeting daily encounters of socially marginalized individuals—those living on the edges of society. Using a twin-lens reflex Rolleiflex camera with medium-format film and harsh flash lighting, participants will create portraits in the mobile studio of the exhibition.
This exhibition was made possible in part by a generous contribution from the VandenEnde Foundation.
