Foam presents a podcast series around the exhibition Foam Talent 2020. Listen to Foam Talks: Talent Edition to dive deeper into the portfolios of this year's Foam Talents.

The third episode of Foam Talks: Talent edition is with Matthew Leifheit, photographer, magazine-editor, publisher, and professor based in Brooklyn, NY and Allen Frame, photographer, writer, curator, professor and theatre and movie director. Allen Frame is also the author of the text on Matthew’s portfolio in Foam Magazine issue 55: Talent 2020, describing his series Fire Island Night, which Matthew has now retitled to To Die Alive. This conversation was recorded on the occasion of the Queer History Month 2021, an initiative of IHLIA, the biggest archive of LGBTI history in Europe, based in Amsterdam.

To Die Alive is a fantastical exploration of Fire Island, the historic gay retreat located less than 50 miles from New York City.

Foam produced this episode as part of a special series of podcasts on the occasion of Foam Talent 2020. Each episode focusses on one artist aiming to evoke a conversation around their approach, offer an insight into the discourses surrounding a specific project, contextualizing it within the photography field while not forgetting the personal stories and dreams behind it. In addition, each conversation features a special guest that has a shared professional or personal connection to the artist. The encounters are moderated by Mirjam Kooiman, curator of this year's Foam Talent exhibition.

Stenen Hoofd 2021: Aàdesokan - Fordili: A Cenotaphic Allusion to Cognition

Gallery Mercatorplein is a recurring photo exhibition in the public space. This edition features Afropean Express: Travels in Black Europe, a project of writer and photographer journalist Johny Pitts.

For this edition of Gallery Mercatorplein, Foam collaborated with the Nieuw Amsterdam Academie. The Nieuw Amsterdam Academie wants to make youngsters from Amsterdam Nieuw-West more aware of their personal development, their neighbourhood and the active role that they could take on within their neighbourhood. In collaboration with curator Kim Knoppers and photographer <a href="https://www.angelatellier.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Angela Tellier</a>, Pien, Soumaya, Rieke, Jochem and Kristen made a selection out of the works of photographer Johny Pitts. These works are presented in this year&rsquo;s edition of Gallery Mercatorplein. Via QR codes on the photos, the youngsters tell their own stories about the selection they have made.

ABOUT JOHNY PITTS Johny Pitts examines the life of black communities, travelling across Europe. In search of the "Afropean" identity he went across the continent travelling from London to Paris, via Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm, Moscow, Rome, Marseille, Madrid and Lisbon sketching an underexposed story about the continent in words and images.&nbsp; AFROPEAN The term 'Afropean' was founded in the nineties by Marie Daulne, a Belgian-Congolese musician who performs under the name Zap Mama and by the Scottish musician David Byrne. They saw a new continent emerge in Europe, where the black community had a big influence. For Pitts it meant the following: "'Afropean' suggested I could be whole and unhyphenated, I could incorporate all these different things into my identity, and in a way transcend them.&rdquo;, &ldquo;These scattered fragments of Afropean experience had formed a mosaic inside my mind ( &hellip; ) the Afropean reality was a bricolage of blackness and I&rsquo;d experienced an Africa that was both in and of Europe.&rdquo; &ndash; Afropean. He captures impressions of the cities &ndash; graffiti, snow, figures, metro stations &ndash; in tranquil, atmospheric photos in tones of black and white. The people portraited in the different urban landscapes in Europe seem to be lost in their own thoughts and reflect a feeling of introspection and loneliness that Pitts might be familiar with. Gallery Mercatorplein 2020

Gallery Mercatorplein is a recurring photo exhibition in the public space. This edition features the latest project of Ahmet Polat.

The project Postcards from Morocco tells the stories of Moroccan Amsterdammers and mirrors them with the stories of those who stayed behind, in Morocco. This year marks 50 years since the Netherlands and Morocco signed a recruitment treaty, which made Moroccan labour migration to the Netherlands officially possible. Ahmet Polat initiated the Postcard from Morocco project to shine a light on the major impact of the treaty on the societies and cultures of both countries.
Postcards from Morocco has been produced in Amsterdam and Morocco, in collaboration with Shelley Lashley and Studio Polat. Migration is an important and recurring topic for Amsterdam, influencing the city's stratification and complexity. While Amsterdam is already welcoming a new generation of migrants, an older group is asking for attention and is still seeking its place in the city's collective memory. Ahmet Polat wants to visualise, share and discuss these questions in collaboration with Foam in order to gradually aid social cohesion.

During this evening, Polat will be joined by Nadia Zerouali (culinary writer), Marcel Feil (Artistic director, Foam), and some of his portrait subjects to discuss key themes of the project. You can sign up on the <a href="https://www.podiummozaiek.nl/programma/details/344346/postcards-from-morocco+">site</a> of Podium Moza&iuml;ek.&nbsp; EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES Foam wants to strengthen its relations with schools around Mercatorplein and involve local residents in the exhibition in an accessible way. To achieve this, Foam works together with various schools in the area, including the Sint Janschool and the Joop Westerweelschool, and all students from the second year of the Munduscollege. All programmes are supervised by museum teachers from Foam. In order to involve local residents around Mercatorplein in the exhibition, Foam is working with the OBA Mercatorplein and the stichting Vrouw Vooruit to offer workshops and guided tours for different public groups. For the elderly there is a workshop and tour of the exhibition on 6 November at the OBA Mercatorplein.&nbsp;
ABOUT AHMET POLAT Ahmet Polat (1978) is a Dutch photographer and filmmaker. With series such as Kemal's Dream, Dark Moon and A Woman in a Men's World, Ahmet Polat has established himself as a connecting storyteller. Through his photography and fieldwork, Polat wants to build bridges between different cultures, identities and history. After having lived and worked in Istanbul for ten years, he returned to the Netherlands in 2015 and the same year was named Photographer des Vaderlands.

Opening Gallery Mercatorplein

On Thursday 26 September, Foam invites you to an evening around the work of Dominic Hawgood. With a live performance by Tripping Jaguar.

ATTENTION: This event is sold out In his solo exhibition Casting Out The Self, Hawgood combines the rituals of spiritual ceremonies with the instruments used for the construction of our digital reality. Employing the latest technologies in computer graphics to give shape to the hyperreal, Hawgood seeks to question our perception of reality.
With a background in both Cognitive Neuropsychology and Art Studies, Ph.D.-researcher Nim Goede will reflect on the viewing experience of Dominic Hawgood&rsquo;s work, in between what one sees and what one thinks or expects to see. This short lecture will be followed by a Q&amp;A between Dominic Hawgood and Foam curator Mirjam Kooiman about his artistic practice. The evening will be concluded with a performance by Trippin Jaguar. Where psychedelics informed Hawgood&rsquo;s exhibition Casting Out The Self, Trippin Jaguar takes the same inspiration to create music. His performance will be an artistic response to Hawgood&rsquo;s work.

ABOUT NIM GOEDE Nim Goede is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Amsterdam and a core member of the Neurocultures &amp; Neuroaesthetics research group at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis. With a Research Master degree in both Cognitive Neuropsychology and Art Studies, he adopts a humanities perspective to reflect on neuroculture through the lens of the arts. He explores the ways in which particular artworks allow us to re(con)figure our neural self-image. In addition, he is a writer and editor for the contemporary art magazine Metropolis M and a lecturer at the Vrije Academie.
ABOUT TRIPPIN JAGUAR Francesco Robustelli is a Dutch/Italian music producer, composer and sound designer. Under the alias Trippin Jaguar, Francesco explores the deeper side of electronica as well as breaking down cultural barriers in the electronic music scene by combining electronic music with influences from shamanic rituals and traditional psychedelic medicine. Trance, spirituality and the boundaries of the human experience play an important role in the work of Trippin Jaguar. In the approach of music as a way to transform consciousness, he combines traditional knowledge of sound healing with the newest technologies. He not only performs on stage but also works on immersive audio installations and transformative music projects.
ABOUT DOMINIC HAWGOOD Dominic Hawgood&rsquo;s work is based on photography, but he concentrates on site-specific installations. His work comprises both moving and stationary images, for which he increasingly uses digital media. Since graduating from London&rsquo;s Royal College of Art in 2014, Hawgood has had solo exhibitions at TJ Boulting, London; Oonagh Young Gallery, Dublin; and the Digital Festival X British Science Festival in Brighton. In 2014 he won the British Journal of Photography International Award. In 2015 he was selected as Foam Talent and his project Under the Influence was included in the traveling Foam Talent exhibition. Dominic Hawgood lives and works in London.

Hallucinating the Real

Gallery Mercatorplein is a recurring photo exhibition in the public space. This edition shows the works of three photographers who are part of this year's selected Foam Talents. 

In their work, a selection of which can be seen at Mercatorplein, photographers Vasantha Yogananthan, Viacheslav Poliakov and Namsa Leuba share their views on the lives of populations related to their own roots.

Since 2016, Vasantha Yogananthan (France, 1985) has worked on a contemporary interpretation of The Ramanyana, a living story about the exiled prince Rama that was first described in 300 BC. For his series A Myth of Two Souls, a selection of which is on view at Mercatorplein, the photographer crosses India from north to south and captures the seven chapters of the original poem by combining landscapes, portraits, hand-painted photographs and texts by Indian writers.

Shown alongside Yogananthan's impressive visual report, is the work of Viacheslav Poliakov's (Ukraine, 1986) work exploring the undiscovered field of coincidences through the project Lviv &ndash; God&rsquo;s&nbsp;Will. It is human to think that national history is shaped by big, compelling events, but through his work, the photographer reveals that it is often the unlikely and spontaneous incidents of daily life that have the most impact on the history of cultures.

Namsa Leuba's (1982) photography is a personal discovery of the artist's African roots. In her work, she explores the aesthetic similarities of African and European history and perspectives, and reinvents them. Leuba challenges a truth that is presumed to be true in photojournalism and ethnology.

Foam is proud to present the exhibition Foam 3h: Stelios Kallinikou - Studies in Geology.

A sense of continual exploration of national identity typifies the body of work of Cypriot photographer Stelios Kallinikou (Limassol, 1985), who creates magical and beautiful images that are deeply rooted in the Cypriot landscape. The landscape, as a result of our collective action, becomes a vehicle for his thoughts on place, history, time and space &ndash;all fundamental issues related to human nature.

Kallinikou&rsquo;s ongoing series Studies in Geology presents a group of photographs taken in an ancient mine hidden in the pine forests of Troodos Mountains, the largest mountain range in Cyprus. Based on archaeological excavations, mining activity in Cyprus can be dated back to the 3rd century BC. The presence of a large number of valuable minerals and useful, raw materials has made mining in the area attractive throughout the ages. This influenced the course of history and the interference of foreign powers on the island. Kallinikou enters the crater of the mine and the resulting lake to observe the earth as an open body. He meticulously examines the ground and the surface of the lake for traces of human gesture as it has been inscribed throughout time. The result is a fascinating series at the edge of photography and painting in which Kallinikou is in constant dialogue with the act of seeing whilst considering new possibilities and limitations of the photographic medium.

Previously his work has been described as 'local poetry'. Kallinikou is not interested in narrating a linear story. His aim is to conjure a space that is beyond words. Simultaneously his appealing and technically skilled body of work circles around the politics of the landscape. By adopting the strategies of documentary photography via an introspective meditative pace, the world he constructs serves as a speculative scenario through which he can better envisage his relationship to territorial and ideological notions of the landscape such as birthplace, motherland and national identity.

ABOUT STELIOS KALLINIKOU Stelios Kallinikou (b.1985, Limassol) studied History &amp; Archaeology and Photography in Greece. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions and group shows at Encontros da Imagem in Braga, Portugal (2014); the Equilibrists, a project organised by the New Museum, New York and the DESTE Foundation, Athens, Greece(2016); Point Centre of Contemporary art in Nicosia,Cyprus(2017); APHF, Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece(2017); Nimac (Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre), Nicosia, Cyprus (2018). In 2015 he was nominated for Pla(t)form Winterthur fotomuseum and in 2016 he was nominated for the Prix Pictet award. Kallinikou will be a resident at the K&uuml;nstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2018-2019). He is the co-founder and director of Thkio Ppalies Artist-led Project Space, based in Nicosia, Cyprus.

ABOUT JEAN-VINCENT SIMONET Jean-Vincent Simonet (1991, France) graduated with high honours from &Eacute;CAL in 2014 before starting his career of mixing editorial, fashion and experimental photography. His personal work was exhibited at&nbsp;Pla(t)form 2015&nbsp;in Fotomuseum Winterthur and he also won a&nbsp;Swiss Design Award&nbsp;in Basel this year. Simonet was selected as a&nbsp;Foam Talent&nbsp;in 2015 and in the same year his exhibition&nbsp;<a href="/museum/programme/jean-vincent-simonet">Maldoror</a>&nbsp;was presented at&nbsp;Foam 3h, Foam's project space for emerging talent. He lives and works in Paris.

Collecting Photography Course | fall 2017

Gallery Mercatorplein is a recurring photo exhibition in the public space. This edition shows the works of three Foam 3h photographers. 

Especially for Gallery Mercatorplein Foam selected three artists who had or will have an exhibition at Foam in 2017: Diego Moreno (Mexico, 1992), Osborne Macharia (Kenya, 1986) and Stefanie Moshammer (Austria, 1988). Foam 3h is the exhibition space where recently graduated artists are invited to present their first museum exhibit.&nbsp;

ABOUT DIEGO MORENO Referencing the Mexican style of magical realism, Moreno fuses apocalyptic visions of the Catholic religion with pre-Hispanic traditions. Over three years Diego Moreno staged scenes of&nbsp;panzudos&nbsp;in domestic spaces, portraying the home as a place plagued by ghosts to evoke the disturbing history of his family.&nbsp;
ABOUT OSBORNE MACHARIA Osborne Macharia creates monumental portraits of members from invented Kenyan tribes. Through highly stylised Afro-futuristic imagery, Macharia reformulates real events in the history of Kenya, such as British colonial rule and the Mau Mau rebellion. ABOUT STEFANIE MOSHAMMER Moshammer, who is based in Austria, presents visual stories connected to her own experiences and observations. Her personal impressions of remarkable locations result in colourful and poetic images. Stefanie Moshammer is the first recipient of the <a href="/about/press-office/new-stipendium">Florentine Riem Vis grant</a> for her work&nbsp;Vegas and She&nbsp;and the series&nbsp;Land of Black Milk,&nbsp;which she photographed in Rio de Janeiro.&nbsp;

On Friday 23 June, Foam is hosting a talk and book signing with artists Roger Ballen and Asger Carlsen.

On the occasion of the exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/roger-ballen-asger-carlsen">Roger Ballen &amp; Asger Carlsen</a>&nbsp;- <a href="/museum/programme/roger-ballen-asger-carlsen">No Joke</a>&nbsp;at Foam, Ballen and Carlsen will discuss their individual artistic practices and their collaborative project <a href="/museum/programme/roger-ballen-asger-carlsen">No Joke</a>&nbsp;during a Q&amp;A with curator Mirjam Kooiman. Participants&nbsp;will have the unique opportunity to purchase the almost sold out limited edition book, No Joke&nbsp;(M&ouml;rel Books, 2016), and have it signed by the artists.

ABOUT THE BALLEN &amp; CARLSEN COLLABORATION Although Roger Ballen lives in Johannesburg and Asger Carlsen in New York, the two artists have been working together online for some four years. In their bizarre universe, Carlsen&rsquo;s use of the human body as a plastic medium and Ballen&rsquo;s interest in collages and the occult merge together. They create an outlandish world full of distorted bodies, manic creatures, flesh and rough sketches in black, white and grey. Both frightening and intimate, their work demonstrates fiction&rsquo;s power to delve more deeply into the human spirit, compared to reality.

Artist talk: Ballen & Carlsen

Foam presents No Joke, a joint project by photographers Roger Ballen and Asger Carlsen.

In the collaborative project No Joke, artists Roger Ballen &nbsp;(b. 1950, US) and Asger Carlsen (b. 1973, DK), explore the more sinister sides of the human psyche. Together the duo produced 37 images, without ever working in the same studio at the same time: their creative exchange and co-creation has been a purely online affair.&nbsp;Their menacing work evokes a sense of anxiety and longing that is usually experienced only in dreams.

Asger Carlsen first suggested collaborating with Roger Ballen for an assignment by VICE in 2013. This evolved into a remarkable creative exchange that is conducted online only: the images with a white background originated in Carlsen&rsquo;s studio in New York, while the images with a dark background originated in Johannesburg, where Ballen lives and works. The artists sent their work to each other and elaborated further on each other&rsquo;s images. This resulted in the dark and mysterious book No Joke&nbsp;(M&ouml;rel Books, 2016): a collection of still lifes, crippled female figures, and fusions of their self-portraits.
No Joke&nbsp;at Foam is the first presentation in a museum of this work. The obscurely designed presentation shows framed images on dark-grey walls. The works are accompanied by bizarre sculptures and installations created by the two artists on-site, specifically for this exhibition. The sculptures form spatial renderings of their photographic images.

ABOUT ROGER BALLEN Roger Ballen (1950, US), award-winning photographer from Johannesburg, concentrates on fictitious narratives. Ballen&rsquo;s work has featured in more than fifty exhibitions worldwide, including in the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum in London, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work was on show at Foam as part of the group exhibition PRUNE &ndash;&nbsp;Abstracting Reality&nbsp;in <a href="/museum/programme/2009-year-in-review">2009</a>. Latest publications include&nbsp;Asylum of the Birds&nbsp;(2015),&nbsp;The Theatre of Apparitions&nbsp;(2016) and the upcoming publication&nbsp;Ballenesque- Roger Ballen a Retrospective&nbsp;due for release in September 2017. Ballen has released numerous videos including&nbsp;I Fink U Freeky'&nbsp;with&nbsp;Die Antwoord&nbsp;in 2012.&nbsp;Roger Ballen is represented by Reflex Gallery, Amsterdam.
ABOUT ASGER CARLSEN Asger Carlsen (1973, DK) is known for his distorted black and white photographs of the human body. He has exhibited worldwide includeing at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen; Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York; ParisPhoto, Paris; Dittrich &amp; Schlechtriem, Berlin; MACRO, Rome; G/P gallery, Tokyo and Bruce Silverstein Gallery, New York. In 2016 his work from his series Hester was part of the exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/second-skin">Foam in Van Loon IV: Second Skin</a>. His images have featured in international magazines such as&nbsp;HotShoe International,&nbsp;Frieze,&nbsp;Dazed &amp; Confused&nbsp;and&nbsp;The New Yorker. Carlsen published two monographs:&nbsp;Hester&nbsp;(2012) and&nbsp;Wrong&nbsp;(2010). He lives and works in New York.

Roger Ballen & Asger Carlsen

Rapha&euml;l Dallaporta is the winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2011, for which he gets a solo exhibition in Foam. 

French photographer Rapha&euml;l Dallaporta (b. 1980) received the <a href="/talent/foam-paul-huf-award">Foam Paul Huf Award</a> from an international jury. The prize is awarded annually to an up-and-coming international photographer below the age of 35.&nbsp;The resulting exhibition, which is a part of the award, consists of four of Dallaporta's series.
Characteristic of Observation's&nbsp;four series is the clinical, perceptive style of photography. Dallaporta&rsquo;s photos possess an inner tension that stems from the beauty of the object and the serious tone of the subject.
The photographer works intensively with specialists in fields relating to his series. Jury chair Fran&ccedil;ois H&eacute;bel (director of Les Rencontres d&rsquo;Arles international photography festival) comments on Dallaporta&rsquo;s work: "He combines involvement with a highly analytical approach to social perversities. His uncompromising, conceptual and extremely creative approach mark him as an authentic artist who stands out in the young generation of photographers."

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The landmines in the Antipersonnel series have an exquisite beauty: small, with pleasant colours and an attractive form. Elegantly photographed, simply framed and persuasively presented, their aesthetic quality is what first attracts attention. Until we realise the full purpose of their existence: pure cruelty.
Fragile features frontal and objective shots of organs and limbs taken from corpses. Dallaporta worked with a team of forensic surgeons for this series. While the physicians were looking for causes of death, Dallaporta recorded the body parts they examined and the instruments they used. The power of this work comes from the combination of apparently neutral images and texts relating to human pain.
Dallaporta also worked with experts when making Ruins. He travelled with a team of French archaeologists to Afghanistan. Using a drone, he took numerous photos of the war-ravaged landscape. In combination, these form a single large aerial picture that also shows traces of ancient civilisations. Past and present come together in this series of almost scientific photos.
In Domestic Slavery, Dallaporta (pictures) and Ondine Millot (text) tackle the tragic reality of this phenomenon: people, many unregistered migrants, held against their will in places where their voice cannot be heard. While their names have been altered, the stories are true. Dallaporta&rsquo;s clinical, unsentimental pictures of the buildings in which these modern-day slaves are kept testify to the banality of day-to-day inhumanity.&nbsp;

The current presentation at Gallery Mercatorplein, which can be seen from 2 June to 13 July, shows the series Do Camels Dream of Snow? by Simon Wald-Lasowski (Paris, 1980).

The series visualises an imaginary tribe, dreaming of a different, better world somewhere else. This desire is a universal, human given fact and with this exhibition, the artist thinks this is axiomatic and hopes to show the beauty of it.&nbsp;Next to colourful photography, he created video works as a part of this series.
ABOUT THE ARTIST Simon Wald-Lasowski (Paris, 1980) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2004 as a graphic designer. Since then, he has worked as a freelance photographer and art director for various clients from the cultural and commercial world and regularly publishes his work in various magazines. He always tries to approach each project, as varied as it may be, with the same personal ironic touch. This makes it therefore sometimes difficult to differentiate his applied work from his self-initiated work. Currently Wald-Lasowski is artist in residence at Jan Van Eijck Academie.

Introducing Foam Magazine #62 motherlands

Coinciding with the commencement of the annual olive harvest, we co-stream ‘Counter-Surveillance: H2’, a community-based project in the city of Hebron, Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The olive tree symbolizes the resilience of the Palestinian people in their ongoing resistance to live under Israeli military oppression. In line with Israeli’s surveillance effort, Artist + Allies x Hebron has created a counter offense by placing surveillance cameras in Palestinian owned olive groves.

Counter-Surveillance: H2

‘Counter-Surveillance’ seeks through its installation of custom-made surveillance cameras throughout Palestinian-owned olive groves, to co-opt this same technology but with a radically different purpose – by live broadcasting the images to various sites across the world, the electronic gaze does not seek to control, punish, or instill fear. Rather, it is an attempt at a community-building strategy that spans the globe, where individuals and organisations of conscience across the planet can keep a vigilant eye on these precious trees, some of which are over 900years old. It is an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity by ensuring that these courageous residents and their heroic acts are not only surveilled but also seen.
