Photography Through the Lens of AI

In a four-part series led by acclaimed Polaroid artists Rhiannon Adams, Ellen Carey & John Reuter, and Marcel Veldman and Foam 3h alumnus Ece Gökalp, the participating students were able to use the recently launched Polaroid I-2 camera – the first advanced instant camera with built-in manual controls. Moreover, they had the chance to discuss their perspectives about the possibilities of storytelling and the enduring relevancy of this unique medium.

Students as well as young, self-made creatives approached the medium from various angles and shed light on its artistic, social, and technological significance by pushing the boundaries of what instant film can achieve. The results of their collective efforts are now on display as part of an exclusive online exhibition.

We take a look at projects by three artists that explore how photography can create artistic portrayels of social societies. Myriam Boulos (LB), a 2022 Foam Talent, shows a series of portraits of friends and strangers that have been affected by the blast and economy in Beirut. Rahim Fortune (US) uses documentary photography to ask fundamental questions about American identity. Lastly, Bieke Depoorter (BE) 

explores the complexities of the photographic enterprise, grappling with the relationship between photographer and subject.

Do you want to photograph the streets of Amsterdam and improve your creativity and photography skills? Foam's weekly Street Photography Course starts on 13 May. In four weeks, you will work towards a personal series of street photos.

Every week, we focus on a different aspect of street photography. You will get a specific assignment as a starting point and will obtain lots of tips along the way. Since you learn the most when you practice, we will spend most time dedicated to taking photos and working on your series. Photography is a powerful tool that plays an important role in constructing cultural identity. <a href="/book-a-visit/public/zooming-in-photography-performance-and-the-mythical/21-07-2021">Sign up</a> to join us on 21 July for a Zoom conversation with Foam Talents Plantation (Ayomide Tejuoso) and Lisandro Suriel, along with artist-archivist Angela N. Carroll.

This Summer, we dive deeper into Foam Talent 2021 by pairing up the selected artists in an online Zoom conversation. Each of the three events will be divided into two parts. The first part introduces the artists and their projects, focussing on their approach and motivation. After this, we take a closer look at the topics connecting the artists' work, aiming to contextualize their series within the photography field as well as current discourses in society. Each conversation will feature special guests to share their unique perspectives and reflections.

Photography is a powerful tool that&nbsp;plays an important role in constructing cultural identity.&nbsp;Questions on its influence on the viewer&rsquo;s perception, bias, and thoughts contribute to an important&nbsp;discussion on representation. Plantation (Ayomide Tejuoso) and Lisandro Suriel have developed unique approaches weaving photography, performance and mysticism, offering a visual exploration of identity and belonging.
In their practices, both artists relate to the metaphysical and integrate performance into their work processes. Centring on the body of the artist, Plantation (Ayomide Tejuoso)&rsquo;s work is about finding her space in the world to reflect on issues like sexism, racism, and homophobia. Lisandro Suriel&rsquo;s project Ghost Island stems from his research on forgotten histories in Saint Martin and combines academia and indigenous knowledge to create new imaginary.&nbsp;
In their own ways and rooted in their individual cultural backgrounds, both artists contribute to a more expansive visual representation of Black identity. Together with Angela N. Carroll, artist-archivist and investigator of art history and culture, Plantation (Ayomide Tejuoso) and Lisandro Suriel will share insights into their artistic processes, research and the context of their work.

Berlin - Photography in limbo Nurturing talent in times of crisis 

Artists Femke Herregraven and Mali Arun, along with Professor Katja Kwasek, delve deeper into the question of what role photography plays in how we relate to nature.

Femke Herregraven and Mali Arun both use innovative visual strategies to investigate how technological developments are fundamentally changing the relationship between humans and nature. While Herregraven explores how the landscape is increasingly subjected to capitalist forces, Arun's work revolves around the idea of ​​paradise and how tourism and technology appear to have produced an increasingly dystopian, man-made landscape.
Artists Femke Herregraven and Mali Arun will introduce their work during this evening, followed by an analysis by Katja Kwasek (professor of modern and contemporary art history, VU University Amsterdam) regarding her research into the Anthropocene. The evening will end with an open discussion and the opportunity to ask questions.

The Future of Landscape Photography

Following the opening of On Earth - Imaging, Technology and the Natural World, Foam will be exploring the future of landscape photography followed by a curator's tour in the presence of the artists.

Technological developments and the rapidly changing climate have altered our relationship to nature. Photography offers a means of observing the world and our effect upon it, but can it also act as a catalyst in adopting new ways of relating to the environment?
On the occasion of the exhibition On Earth &ndash; Imaging, Technology and the Natural World these and other questions will be discussed in artist panels that will centre around three important trends in contemporary landscape photography. Foam invited a number of artists -part of the exhibition On Earth&nbsp;- who use innovative visual strategies to examine how technological development has fundamentally changed the relationship between man and nature. They do so using the same modern imaging technologies through which we increasingly experience the world: often digitally and mediated by our screens.
The programme will be opened by Foam director Marcel Feil, and moderated by exhibition curator Hinde Haest. The panel discussions will be followed by a curator&rsquo;s tour in the presence of the artists.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION <a href="/museum/programme/on-earth-imaging-technology-and-the-natural-world">On Earth &ndash; Imaging, Technology and the Natural World</a> unites the work of 27 contemporary artists who use innovative visual techniques to reflect on the evolving relationship between humans and nature. Besides photography, the artists make use of installation, sculpture, in-game photography and video. Their various visual approaches diverge and converge throughout the exhibition. These artists show they both seek to explore and reunite our technological, socio-economical, spiritual and political connection with the world.

Introduction to collect photography

Curators, artists and educators will discuss ideas on collecting and presenting photography in light of current developments of the medium.

The talk is presented as part of the exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/reflected-paris">Reflected... Works from the Foam Collection</a>, on show at Atelier N&eacute;erlandais.
Throughout its history, photography has been inextricably bound up with technological inventions. Today's advancements are prompting a debate about what the medium is &ndash; or can become &ndash; as well as how it transforms our experience of the world. With the latest developments in 3D rendering, photogrammetry and CGI, photography no longer functions solely at the level of representation, but has also become a building block for new realities, transforming the use of the medium. The <a href="/museum/programme/reflected-paris" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.foam.org/museum/programme/reflected-paris">bold, contemporary collection</a> focuses on the possibilities of photography and promotes work by young, promising artists working with photography. Film, sculpture and photography-led installations are also well represented in the collection, reflecting Foam's ambitious <a href="/museum/programme/archive/exhibitions" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-cke-saved-href="https://www.foam.org/museum/programme/archive/exhibitions">exhibition programme</a>.

Foam Talk | Collecting and presenting post-photography

On Friday 15 June, Foam invites all aspiring photographers and art enthusiasts to join a panel discussion about the challenges of being an emerging talent.

Foam&rsquo;s artistic director, Marcel Feil, will go into conversation with three young photography talents: Lilly Lulay, Nadja Bournonville and Thomas Albdorf. They are the first three recipients of recommended, a fellowship initiated by Olympus, Haus der Photographie / Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and Fotografie Forum Frankfurt. The fellowship enables young image-makers to produce and internationally exhibit new work.
During the evening, the fellows will talk about their&nbsp;entry into the professional sphere and the development of their work thereafter. What were their expectations? What challenges did they face along the way? What has been the outcome of their various efforts? And how can fellowships, such as recommended,&nbsp;and institutions help young talent further their practice?
The artists will also introduce the bodies of work they created during the fellowship. Thomas Albdorf and Foam curator Hinde Haest will discuss Albdorf&rsquo;s solo-exhibition <a href="/museum/programme/thomas-albdorf">Room With a View</a> that is on view at Foam from 15 June. There will be ample room for questions from the audience.

How to Develop Your Photography Practice

In collaboration with College-Club, Foam is organizing an evening on the origins of photography and how it developed into the influential medium it is today.

Seated in the Gold and Silver exhibition, the two speakers will tell you about the art-historical perspective and materiality of photography. We end the evening with a drink in Foam Editions, the in-house gallery of Foam, where you can see examples of what you have just heard.

The making of photography

This winter holiday Foam is organising a workshop for children between 8 and 12 years of age. Do you love photography and do you enjoy working together? Sign up for our children's workshop.

Please note: The workshop on 3 January is fully booked.&nbsp;
You will begin the workshop by exploring the exhibitions at Foam. Here, you will look for inspiration for the photos you will create yourself. Under the guidance of a museum educator you will discuss what you see with the other children. In the workshop you get to work yourself. While you photograph, the teacher gives you tips on how to improve your photos further. At the end of the workshop all the children present their best photo on a large screen. You will leave this workshop as an even better photographer with a print of your favourite photo to take home.
Foam provides basic compact cameras for this workshop. Of course, you are free to use your own camera if you prefer. In that case, remember to bring a fully charged battery, an empty SD card and a transfer cable. The use of your own materials is at your own risk. There is a limited amount of spots available, so be sure to sign up on time! Tickets are only valid for reserved dates. Unfortunately it is not possible to change dates or cancel without charge after your purchase has been made. Do you have a Stadspas? In that case, this workshop is only &euro; 3,50. Choose the 'Student/CJP' option when booking.

Winter Holidays: Photography Workshop for Children

On the occasion of the exhibition Foam 3h: Foam X Ruang Mes 56, Foam organises an evening of discussions around global collaboration.

Foam 3h: Foam X Ruang Mes 56 is the last of three collaborative projects presented this year at Foam 3h as part of Collaborate! A year of visual encounters. Photography platforms holding a strong position in their local art scenes were selected as partners for the initiative. Starting with Hydra in Mexico City (Mexico), the African Artists&rsquo; Foundation in Lagos (Nigeria) and finally Ruang Mes 56 in Yogyakarta (Indonesia), these collaborations offered Foam a unique opportunity to present young talent from different cultural contexts and to research new developments in regions that are oftentimes overlooked.
The evening programme kicks off with an introduction of these three recent collaborations and is enriched along the way with presentations from experts such as Kitty Zijlmans (Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory/World Art Studies) and Wimo Ambala Bayang (co-founder of Ruang Mes 56).&nbsp; Programme | 7.15pm &ndash; 10pm
