Foam Paul Huf Award 2024: Jury members announced

The 18th winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award will be revealed on Thursday 13 June 2024.

This award for talented upcoming photographers is organised annually by Foam and evaluated by an independent and renowned jury. The jury for the 2024 edition consists of the following members: John Fleetwood (chair, South-Africa), Anna-Alix Koffi (Côte d'Ivoire), Felipe Romero Beltrán (Colombia), Kathrin Schönegg (Germany), and Kim Sunyoung (Republic of Korea). In the following weeks, the jury will start reviewing the portfolios of nominated artists from all over the world to select a winner.

The award consists of a cash prize of €20.000 and a solo exhibition at Foam. Above all, the winner will see their name added to an impressive list of alumni. In 2023 the Foam Paul Huf Award was awarded to the Colombian photographer Felipe Romero Beltrán (1992) whose exhibition Dialect was on display at Foam earlier this year.

About the Jury

John Fleetwood is a curator, co-head of BA Photography at the KABK and director of Photo, a multifunctional platform in South Africa for the development and promotion of socially engaged photography. Anna-Alix Koffi is a creative director, editor and the founder of OFF the wall cultures photo, Woman Paper Visa, and SOMETHING WE AFRICANS GOT. Felipe Romero Beltrán is an award-winning photographer, whose work is deeply rooted in exploring social issues, particularly focusing on the introduction of new narratives within documentary photography. Kathrin Schönegg is a curator, awarded author on photography, and the head of the photography department at the Münchner Stadtmuseum. Kim Sunyoung is senior curator at Museum Hanmi and leads the open call program MH Talent Portfolio, a programme aimed at fostering diverse collaborations between young artists and the museum.

International experts

To produce an internationally representative selection, Foam approached twenty-four nominators from various parts of the world. Specialists and experts in the field of photography were each asked to select a number of five talented upcoming photographers in their own region. The award is open to upcoming photographers from all ages, working in all photographic genres: from documentary or applied photography to journalistic or independent work. The winner’s work must exhibit clear visual language and contribute significantly to today's photographic community in both form and content.

About Paul Huf

The award is inspired by the Dutch photographer Paul Huf (1924 – 2002) and his open and enthusiastic approach to new photography and upcoming talent – which is parallel to Foam's mission. Paul Huf was known for his innovative photographic technique, and he was personally involved in the establishment of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2001. In the summer of 2024 Foam will open an exhibition dedicated to his work as a tribute to his 100 years.

Paul Huf was known for his innovative photographic technique, and he was personally involved in the establishment of Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2001.
