Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (in 1870 established by law) is an artists’ institute for selected national and international top talent. Its name refers to the classical Akademia, a place where philosophers, academics and artists meet to test and exchange ideas and knowledge.
Rijksakademie creates an environment in which for two years, artists can concentrate on research, experimental and creating progressive art.
For this unique exhibition Foam has selected a few Rijksakademie alumni of recent years that have worked in varied ways with photography as medium or subject. Their inquiring attitude has been translated to images that deal with the visualisation of history, looking and the interpretation of archives. Participating artists, among others, are Gwenneth Boelens, Lotte Geeven & Sema Bekirovic, Zachary Formwalt, Gert Jan Kocken and Paulien Oltheten.
The exhibition does justice to the foundations of the Rijksakademie and reflects the consistent high quality of the residents of this internationally renowned institution.
Foam is supported by the BankGiro Loterij, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, City of Amsterdam, Delta Lloyd, Olympus and the VandenEnde Foundation.
