Jacob Riis is viewed as one of the founders of documentary photography. Riis used his camera as a tool to help improve the living conditions for New York City’s destitute at the turn of the century. The exhibition comprises vintage photographs by Riis and his contemporaries, the first museum prints from 1946, more recent prints from 1994, and a number of books and personal items. One of his lectures has also been reconstructed.
The exhibition will be opened by Whitney W. Donhauser, director of the Museum of the City of New York, on Thursday 15 February 2018. You are welcome from 5.30pm onwards.
The Other Half - The Activist Photography of Jacob Riis was developed in collaboration with the Museum of the City of New York.
