The result is a magazine with work as provocative as it is poetic and intimate. This work is shown on Foam’s walls in the form of an enlarged magazine dummy and was published as a magazine.
In 70 prints, 35 students from the Photography Department reveal the zeitgeist of their generation. The basic theme of the exhibition is Teenage Magazines, which has been broadly interpreted. The results vary from stand-alone images to short series in which the images’ relationship to its context, a magazine, provides the essential framework. The autonomous character of the department is clearly visible in the exhibition, which contains still lifes, nudes, family portraits, reproductions and form experiments.
It is part of the philosophy of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie for students to move beyond the walls of the institution at an early stage in their education. The Photography Department of this academy is known as a major breeding ground for talent and has produced many internationally recognised photographers including Rineke Dijkstra, Inez van Lamsweerde, Charlotte Dumas, Julika Rudelius and Hellen van Meene.
Foam is supported by the BankGiro Loterij, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, City of Amsterdam, Delta Lloyd, Olympus and the VandenEnde Foundation.
