Stories around Surinamese Wedding Portraits
Do you want to learn more about the photo narratives that helped shape Suriname's history? On the occasion of the exhibition Surinamese Wedding Portraits, we are joined by author and co-curator Lucia Nankoe and programmer Raïsha Zeegelaar to dive deeper into the stories featured in the exhibition.
About the evening
During the night, we will dive into the stories and family photos that are featured in Surinamese Wedding Portraits. Together with programmer Raïsha Zeegelaar (BNNVARA and Ons Suriname), they will touch upon subjects such as love, marriage and immigration in 20th century Suriname and its impact today.
Cook Donovan Liauw Sim will offer us a selection of delicious appetisers inspired by Surinamese wedding traditions. In addition, Lucia will sign her latest publication Trouwportretten. Fotovertellingen uit het Surinaamse verleden (1868-1950).
We wish to thank the descendants who made their photographs available for this exhibition.
This exhibition was created in collaboration with guest curator Lucia Nankoe. Foam also thanks Gerard Sweep and Astrid Waltmans for their support.
The book Trouwportretten. Surinaamse Voorouders in Beeld. Album 1846-1950 was published by Uitgeverij In de Knipscheer in 2019. A follow-up book will be published later this year.
Foam is supported by the VriendenLoterij, Foam Members, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, the VandenEnde Foundation and the City of Amsterdam.
