Museumnacht 2016
On the first Saturday in November, more than 50 museums in Amsterdam are open until late for a very festive cultural night.

With your Museumnacht ticket, you can gain entry to over 50 museums from 19.00 - 02.00 hrs. Foam will be open for an evening filled to the brim with music, performances and new ideas based on the current exhibitions

#SAFEPASSAGE

The Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei (1957, China), who as a political refugee who lived under constant government surveillance, feels related to the growing influx of refugees attempting to enter Europe. The exhibition #SafePassage in Foam deals with the fate of the individual versus the overruling systems of society. He pairs his personal experiences as a refugee of the Chinese government with the stories of hundreds of thousands refugees and migrants who risked their lives to reach Europe, only to find their path barred by a succession of border closures.

BITS OF FREEDOM X THE HMM

Bits of Freedom and The Hmm bring surveillance close to home.  They rapidly scroll past five ideas and projects that examine scrutiny in the private sphere. In 20 slides each, the presenters will talk to you about Google as a surveillance machine. What happens when the people take over the algorithms? Why does Ai Weiwei live in our future? The featured artists are Dries DepoorterRoos GroothuizenMaarten TrompCoralie Vogelaar and Hans de Zwart.

Bits of Freedom is the Dutch digital rights organization.  The Hmm is a real-life Tumblr for image culture.

SAFE PASSAGE SOUNDSCAPE

There is a lot to learn about privacy in Foam. But what’s the best way to retain all that new information?  By relaxing a bit, after all of that mental exertion.  Put on some headphones and drift away on the tones of Parrish Smith, who crafted a soundscape to go with the exhibition #SafePassage. Parrish understands why the individual sometimes wants or needs to rebel against the system. He makes his thoughts on this known exclusively during the Museumnacht. 

NEXT LEVEL: MELANIE BONAJO - NIGHT SOIL

Since 2012 Dutch artist Melanie Bonajo has been working on her trilogy Night Soil. Night Soil is a series of experimental semi-documentary films about cultural phenomena that contradict the linear progression of the capitalist system. Each film explores trends that move outside the sociological and political norms of consumer society, most of them illegal. Night Soil #3 / Nocturnal Gardening, the newest part, examines radical and innovative ways to produce food.

MUSICAL MASSAGE

Temple of Ease are a Musical Massage duo, bringing their modern mystics to the public for a night of harmonic vibration and healing touch. These otherworldly women will be circulating Melanie Bonajo's Night Soil exhibition, inviting you to rest in the vibrations humming through your body, as you surrender to their angelic vocals and gentle touch.

DYNASTIE MARUBI

Dynasty Marubi – A Hundred Years of Albanian Studio Photography shows a selection of photos from an archive consisting of 150.000 glass negatives from an Albanian photo studio. Three generations of photographers, starting in 1856, made studio portraits of a wide variety of people. From the urban bourgeoisie, shepherds, the Ottoman emperor and King Zog, to criminals and famous actors and painters. They also documented important moments from Albanian history. Get to know the rich photographic history of an isolated Eastern European country.

MARUBI PHOTOBOOTH

The exhibition Dynasty Marubi allows you to face a century's worth of Albanian citizens from all walks of life. After studying these pictures for a while, you'll be ready to get photographed in the Foam photo booth. Get forever captured in a moment, just like Marubi's subjects in the photo studio. 

The photobooth is supported by Olympus.

OSDORP TAPES
20:30 – 21.30 and 22:00 – 23.00 hrs.

The gentlemen of Osdorp Tapes have a distinctive interest in music from the former Ottoman empire.  Let the enchanting melodies of bygone times take you on a road trip fuelled by cassette tapes and the odd LP during these unique live performances.  

FOAM CAFE x HALVE SOUL

The Foam Café is not only the place to quench your thirst with delicious cocktails provided by Jameson, but also to get down on the dance floor. You may know the boys of Halve Soul from the successful Zeezout parties throughout the Netherlands, and in Foam they will once again be the life and soul of the party.

MADE OF CHINA

Advertisements are everywhere. On the streets, on your TV, on your computer... Olya Oleinic researches the impact of advertising on our lives. Her work Made of China presents imagery from the country where Buddhism, Communism and consumerism seem to coexist.

TOUR IN DUTCH SIGN LANGUAGE
19:30 – 20.00 and 20:30 – 21.00 hrs.

For the deaf and hard of hearing, Foam organises two tours in Dutch sign language (SLN) during the Museumnacht, taught by a museum educator who is deaf as well. Get to know all about the Marubi exhibition and the power of photography in 30 minutes. For the deaf and hard of hearing, a Museumnacht ticket is only € 12,50.
