Photography lovers, mark your calendars. IDFA, Amsterdam’s documentary film festival is back. To make sure you don’t miss the best photography-related documentaries, Foam curator Kim Knoppers shares her recommendations:

Three documentaries and an installation, including a portrait of living legend Robert Frank and a special project by Dutch photographer Jeroen Kramer. 

  1. DON'T BLINK: ROBERT FRANK

    Living photography legend and creator of the famous book The Americans, Robert Frank, looks back on his life in this comprehensive documentary by Laura Israel. Combine this with Conversations in Vermont, one of Frank's own films, on view at the Stedelijk and around the festival.

  2. MASTER AND TATYANA

    The work of Lithuanian photographer Vitas Luckus is relatively unknown but definitely worth discovering. Watch this documentary and you will find out why.

  3. THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSIEUR KHIAR

    After an intense career in war photography, the Dutch photographer Jeroen Kramer turns his focus to the less spectacular. While at his residence in Beirut, he comes into contact with an old Lebanese man named Monsieur Khiar and with the Mr. Khiar as inspiration he decides to turn the scars from his past life into art.

  4. DocLab EXPO: SEAMLESS REALITY 


    During IDFA in De Brakke Grond you can experience how the borders between physical and virtual reality are vaguing through installations and interactive documentaries. Amongst others is a documentary about Imperial Courts, a social housing project in Los Angeles, which Dutch photographer Dana Lixenberg photographed after the Rodney King Riots in 1993. Since 2008, she has returned every year and created a moving and intimate portrait.
