This year, 1790 artists working with photography responded to Foam’s annual Talent Call, which has the reputation of representing the latest developments in photography. The final selection of 20 artists has been made on the basis of their innovative and often experimental approaches to the medium.
Coinciding with Photo London, the Foam Talent exhibition acts as an annual platform for introducing a new generation of emerging artists to the international art world and provides an insight to current photographic concerns.
Through a myriad of subjects and techniques, this new generation of inspiring artists reflects on the nature, history, and development of the photographic medium. Socio-political concerns are amongst a number of perceptible trends and tendencies: several artists openly denounce totalitarian regimes in their respective countries or comment on the way in which online imagery feeds a collective fear of terrorism. Questions of identity and representation continue to be important themes for a new generation of photographers.
Responses are made on a personal and sometimes intimate level, as well as on a cultural, national, or even global scale. This year’s selection includes a striking number of long-term projects that acquire greater depth of meaning over time – sometimes involving years of study or extensive travels. Equally striking is the embrace of a wide range of mediums by today’s artists, who rarely confine themselves to the camera alone.
The Talent issue of Foam Magazine serves as an exhibition catalogue and provides more in-depth texts around the featured artists' work.
In recent years the Foam Talent exhibition has travelled internationally to cities such as Paris, Brussels, New York and London. This year, the work of the selected photographers tours again, beginning in Amsterdam, travelling to New York, London and Frankfurt.
