Book Launch: Yeray Sabandar Gomuta

Join us on Friday 11 October with Foam Editions for the book launch of Gomuta, the first photobook of Dutch photographer Yeray Sabandar. The book serves as a visual testament to the revival of a cherished childhood memory, meanwhile a testament to those who fight to keep the Basque sport of Jai Alai alive.

About the publication

Gomuta, meaning memory, is a reflection of Sabandar’s childhood memories in his grandparents' village, Legoretta, in Basque country. Each frame is a personal effort to capture the environment, culture, camaraderie, and undying spirit of teenagers fighting to keep the sport of Jai Alai alive. This traditional sport, a unique blend of lacrosse and squash, once echoed through the streets as the region’s most beloved past time. Though it found international fame in the 20th century, its vibrant legacy has diminished, leaving only a few 100 players left in the Basque Country to carry on its legacy. Their passion breathes life back into the aging frontones, the arenas where the sport once thrived.

This book serves as a visual testament to the revival of a cherished childhood memory. It portrays the sport of Jai Alai on the edge of fading into the past and the showcases the enduring human spirit that refuses to let go. It is a personal endeavor to preserve the legacy of Jai Alai, and prevent it from becoming just a memory.
