Michael Christopher Brown
Michael Christopher Brown (1977, USA) was awarded
his B.A. in psychology and a minor in studio art at Western
Washington University in 2000 and in 2003 a master of arts in
documentary photography from the School of Visual Communication at
Ohio University. In 2006 Brown moved to New York and began
freelancing. Michael is currently based
between New York City and Beijing. A contributing photographer at
National Geographic Magazine, his work deals with transition, both
within his life and the communities he
photographs.
His recent works have included stories made in
China, India, Afghanistan, Russia. He has worked
for Fortune, Financial Times, GEO, Time, National
Geographic, the New York Times, Newsweek and Vrij Nederland.
In 2007 American Photo magazine named
Brown among a new generation of photo pioneers. A former attendee
of the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass, his work has won
numerous awards from organizations such as BURN, CENTER, Magenta,
PDN, The Art Directors Club, Canon and
Anthropographia. He has participated in
the following
exhibitions: Revolucione(s), Instituto
Cervantes, New York City (2011); Simply
Beautiful, National Geographic, Steven Kasher Gallery,
New York (2010); Lumix Festival for Young Photojournalism,
Hannover, Germany.
In 2012 his iPhone series from Libya, featured in
the FOAM 2011 Summer issue, will be in the group exhibition
War/Photography: Image of Armed Conflict and its Aftermath, which
will travel from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, to the Annenberg
Space for Photography, the Corcoran Gallery and various
international venues.
