What's Next?

Foam's 10th anniversary project

This year Foam celebrates its tenth anniversary. But rather than look back and celebrate the achievements of the period that has passed, Foam prefers to look forward. It is the perfect moment to explore what the future of photography might be. For this reason Foam has created 'What's Next?', our 10th anniversary project. Throughout 2011 the question 'What's Next?' will be addressed through a range of activities varying from debates, exhibitions and publications.

Foam is asking photographers, critics, writers, academics, researchers, curators and media specialists to formulate their own inspirational visions of the future of photography, based on their specific knowledge. To achieve meaningful results it is essential for Foam to be in close contact with our public, with artists and with representatives of the international photography community. But Foam also sees it as its task to initiate, coordinate and value a debate that transcends traditional boundaries.

Expert Meeting
The project began with an expert meeting at Foam Amsterdam on Saturday, 19 March 2011. The meeting was attended by a select group of international representatives from the cultural landscape, ranging from artists, curators and critics, to journalists and media-experts, all by invitation only. As well as experts' presentations the meeting consisted of various dialogues and debates on the future of photography.

Les Rencontres d'Arles
In July Foam will be in Arles, France for a presentation of What's Next?. Along with Regards et Mémoires, which is organising activities for the eighth year in a row during Recontres d'Arles, Foam will present exhibitions and discussions on the future of photography. In addition Foam has asked students from the National School of Photography in Arles and the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam to set up a studio in 'La Bourse du Travail', in the centre of Arles. Here they will present works on the theme of What's Next?. Foam and Regards et Mémoires will also be showing a selection of Foam Talents 2011 in the La Roquette neighbourhood.
