Co Rentmeester Witnessing Life
Foam presents Witnessing Life, a solo exhibition of Co Rentmeester (1936), one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. As a pioneer of photojournalism as well as commercial photography, Rentmeester has shaped our collective visual memory with iconic images such as his famous Jumpman photo of Michael Jordan, recognized by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential images of all time.
Foam invites you to the official opening of the exhibition on 9 October 2025, in the presence of the artist. Doors open at 17.30 hrs. At 18.00 hrs, Foam’s director Karin van Gilst, together with exhibition curator Aya Musa, will deliver the opening talk. The programme will be followed by a Q&A with Co Rentmeester and Aya Musa.
Witnessing Life reflects on Rentmeester’s unique ability to transcend genres, leaving a profound impact on journalistic, commercial and artistic photography. From his compelling war photography of the Vietnam war and the Watts riots, his wildlife photography to his groundbreaking Malboro Man campaigns, that redefined the visual identity of America. This exhibition not only celebrates Rentmeester’s remarkable career but also marks his symbolic return to Amsterdam, the city where his journey as a photographer began.
